Picture remodeling a bathroom in every decade since the 70’s. You would have seen a lot of changes in colors and styles of plumbing fixtures over that period of time. Polished Chrome was (and still is) the standard that will never really go out of style. Then you had antique brass in the late 70’s and 80’s. The 90’s brought us Polished Brass and the 00’s brushed nickel. In the Teens the hot color was Oil Rubbed Bronze. But there are new colors on the horizon………… Champagne Brass. Matte Black. Which colors will stay in style and which will go out?
Of course the plumbing manufacturers are the impetus behind all these changes. The more the colors change, the more product they sell. If they show off their new colors long enough they may catch on and create a bump in sales. But how long will the new trends last?
Of course you don’t want YOUR home to be one of those filled with behind the times fixtures (like today’s polished brass). I fill dumpsters with that stuff. Door hardware, plumbing fixtures, fans, mirror trims, accessories – all polished brass and nobody wants it. It can get very expensive replacing all that hardware!
So you are planning a remodeling project and you don’t want to fall into that trap. What can you do? Well, I tell my customers that chrome will never go out of style – it’s generic. But it’s also boring. Brushed nickel is also a finish that I believe will stand the test of time. Just brushed chrome really. I believed that oil rubbed bronze is the next polished brass. In a few years I will be filling dumpsters with that stuff. So if you want to play it safe, stay with the silver finishes. The more out there a color is (like today’s champagne brass) the quicker it will go out of style.
